Research Thrusts

This is the archived website for the Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation (CCEI), an Energy Frontier Research Center
funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. CCEI operated from 2009 to 2024 at the University of Delaware.

Overview

Over 15 years of operation, CCEI advanced the fundamental science of catalysis enabling a slate of scientific breakthroughs in sustainable energy solutions and priming the market for biomass-based product applications. CCEI’s research focused on the conversion of lignocellulosic (non-food based) biomass and its derivatives to fuels, chemicals, and other bioproducts. The center also explored feedstock diversification to render biorefineries profitable. CCEI’s work included (1) synthesis and characterization of novel catalysts, (2) development and application of multiscale modeling, (3) catalyst evaluation, (4) mechanistic and kinetics insights of macromolecular chemistry occurring in complex environments of micro- and meso-pores and often in solvents, (5) workforce development, and (6) technology transfer.

Accomplishments & Impact

The video presentation embedded below was delivered in 2020, during CCEI’s third funding cycle. It provided an overview of CCEI’s accomplishments and impact to date at that time (2009 – 2020) and shared the team’s research focus for phase 3 operations (2020-2024).
